Remember that burning sensation in your chest after a heavy meal? Makes you think your heart is on fire? Well, in reality, it’s not your heart on fire, but the feeling is understandable. ‘Heartburn’, as the phenomenon is known, is caused by stomach acid which happens on account of an irritation in the oesophagus, i.e. the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. It leads to a burning discomfort in your upper belly and lower breast bone.

Though triggers vary from person to person, heartburn is likely to be caused by excess eating, consumption of spicy, heavy and greasy food, lying down immediately after eating or even under stress. At a higher risk of heartburn and problems related to acid reflux are smokers, obese people and pregnant women.
