The story of the origins of this popular snack is shrouded in mystery. Legend has it that once upon a time, during the reign of Shah Jahan, when illnesses kept him from devouring the heavily-spiced dishes, his chefs were instructed to prepare light-on-the-palate foods. This, eventually, led to the birth of chaat food. And to flavour these ‘light’ foods, the usual masalas, somehow, didn’t do the trick. Thus came to life, chaat masala.

With time, Chaat Masala gained its popularity throughout India and now serves as the ultimate seasoning to a variety of snacks and other dishes. Its customary function is to add a spicy, salty and sour punch to the dishes, and a proportion may be sprinkled before or after cooking.
