Our nutrition expert, Kavita Devgan, shares a point on ‘sniffing out the real spices’ – if their fragrance is stronger, it means that the natural oil in them is intact, thus, making them healthier. That spices can actually be our first line of defense against these viruses of today, is somehow lost upon a lot of people.

Haldi (turmeric) is enriched with curcumin – a super-ingredient that helps fight off cold and flu, given its potent antiviral qualities – making it ideal for people to consume turmeric for coughs and cold. It also helps lower inflammatory enzyme levels, caused due to infection, in your body and also purifies blood. Always opt, says Kavita Devgan, for a turmeric powder (like Tata Sampann) – that is enriched with natural oils and a minimum of 3% curcumin levels, loaded with antioxidants to keep those infections at bay.
Jeera (cumin seeds) is a good source of iron - a mineral that very integral to haemoglobin.Haemoglobin helps in the movement of oxygen from the lungs to all body cells. Vital for metabolism and energy production, jeera is one of the powerful immune boosting herbs and spices, which helps us achieve a healthybody constitution.
Black pepper is both an antioxidant as well as an antibacterial agent and, thus, contributes to overall wellness. Its vitamin C content naturally boosts immunity and can operate as an excellent antibiotic, thus, making it one of the ideal spices for flu.
Lawang (clove) is an organic expectorant, which helps in the secretion of phlegm in the throat and oesophagus and helps prevent respiratory tract infections.
Traditionally, elders of the house would always ask us to keep a piece of clove under the tongue and keep sucking on it slowly to treat toothaches or sore throats. Drinking clove tea is also a good way to fight off the flu.
Ajwain (carom seeds), a part of the everyday kitchen condiments, keeps cold and nasal blockage at bay. It also helps in effectively tackling respiratory ailments associated with a host of flues.
An expert concoction!
Take some warm milk, add some powdered pure turmeric powder and some pepper to it, and drink at night before going to bed. For the lactose intolerant, you could add some turmeric powder to warm water – with some ginger and pepper (both powerful infection busters) and wake up to a healthier, fighting-fit morning!
Consume 2 gms of pan-roasted carom seeds every day. Ajwain tea is also a good option: to boiling water, add black or green tea, and then add ajwain, ginger, and elaichi (cardamom). Add milk and let the mixture boil well for about three minutes.
